About GRE General Test
The GRE General Test is used for admission to master's and doctoral programmes and by many business and law schools. It is taken on a computer at a test centre or at home.
Since 22 September 2023 the test is about 1 hour 58 minutes: one Analytical Writing task, then two Verbal and two Quantitative Reasoning sections. Analytical Writing always comes first; the Verbal and Quantitative sections follow in either order.
The test adapts by section: the first Verbal and first Quantitative sections are of average difficulty, and the difficulty of each second section depends on how you did in the first.
Verbal and Quantitative are each scored 130 to 170, and Analytical Writing 0 to 6 in half points. There is no pass mark; programmes look at the scores beside the rest of the application.
